a horrible little hospital. Absolutely open. No windows, just balconies. We were about 25 miles from Colombo and, with casevac, they were in and out twice a week, very hard work when they’d come in … I was terrified there, because … I’m one who sees snakes – or so I was told by an old boy in Ceylon: ‘Missie see snake, Missie see snake.’ We had maternity there, and we had a ‘caesar’ one night … I went over, being a midwife, and was bringing the baby back when suddenly I realised something was going across my legs – I had the baby in my arms, so I couldn’t see down – I looked round and there was about ten feet of snake … How I didn’t drop that baby, I’ll never know. I could not move! I just stood and let the snake go. It was terrifying.

The joke was, when I reported it in the morning they all said, ‘Oh, go on, Higgie – you see snakes everywhere,’ and I said, ‘I saw [a] snake!’ Then about two days later … we had those great big iron lungs in those days and I went and pulled the lid back – and there’s a snake in the iron lung! I worried about them getting into babies’ cots. I would have died if any baby had been hurt … I must say, I hated Ceylon.
